Tell Me More...
An invaluable member of the garden for providing a reliable splash of long-lasting, late season colour; Symphyotrichum novi-belgii is steadfastly cheerful, often as plants around it are beginning to fade. This cultivar was bred in the 1950’s by Malvern grower Ernest Ballard, and proffers large, double, pompom-like lilac blooms, held over mounds of glossy dark foliage. These symphyotrichum have particularly sturdy stems, making them effective cut flowers beloved by florists and flower arrangers. New growth emerges at a time when many summer flowering bulbs are dying back, making the two excellent planting companions. Symphyotrichum novae-belgii benefit from an annual application of mulch, best given after they have been cut back. Prefers moist soil, in full sun to partial shade. H&S: 90cm x 50cm. Hardy herbaceous perennial.
