Helleborus are one of the most popular winter flowering bloom and are nicknamed the 'Christmas' or 'Lenten' Rose as flowers can often be seen flourishing on Christmas Day, lifting the gloomiest of spaces. Although their delicate, blousy blooms are similar to that of a Rose, Helleborus are in fact a relation of the Buttercup family. It is known that ancient communities used parts of a Helleborus to create medicines for illness such as gout, paralysis, and insanity. It was later discovered that consuming large volumes of these medicines, or any mixture containing Helleborus were to be detrimental. These plants are highly toxic when ingested and people soon suffered from vertigo and swelling of the tongue and throat. Nowadays the fully hardy perennial is praised for its tolerance of drought and neglect and ability to bloom through cold winter snow when most other plants slumber.
