Tell Me More...
Much loved by florists as an invaluable addition to arrangements both when freshly cut and when dried. Astrantia major subsp. involucrata ‘Shaggy’ is perfect for pollinators and makes a fabulous addition to pots, containers and open ground. Often referred to as Hattie’s Pincushion, this is explained when you look at the blooms and see the centre of each flower looking like pins stuck into a cushion (although we are never sure who Hattie was). These pincushions of tiny, white flowers are surrounded by larger ruff-like bracts and held on upright, branching stems. This creates sprays of generous and intriguing, star-like blooms from June to August. Astrantia major subsp. involucrata ‘Shaggy’ is slug resistant and prefers moist, well-drained soil of any kind and plant in a spot which benefits from a full sun or partial shade. A fully hardy (H7), herbaceous perennial which reaches a height of 75cm and spreads up to 40cm – no additional winter protection is required as plants die back below ground over winter and re-emerge, freshly invigorated, the following spring.
